You speak some Spanish? Indicators of interpreters’ (non-) performance in Spanish criminal courts

In this paper we will attempt to establish the reasons for low-quality performance of court interpreters in context criminal proceedings courts Barcelona. Drawing on a corpus authentic recorded hearings, explore four possible factors that may have an impact interpreters’ performance: length hearing, conversation management problems, experience, and type offence being tried. Furthermore, also analyse unjustified nonrenditions, which are considered important indicator non-performance. The findings discussed linguistic competence interpreter, their role interaction with all participants, established rules professional codes conduct. This draw attention need improve qualification interpreters, but raise awareness interpreter among members judiciary Spain, view protecting procedural rights those who do not speak or understand language conducted.
